A letter to my 14 year old self

Dear Saff,

What you are about to read is from future Saff to prepare for you what is to come and to make you stop worrying about silly uncontrollable things.

You are at high school and it seems really important to have the latest clothes and one of those Jane Norman bags but don’t worry they will soon go out of fashion. It’s often said that Primark isn’t cool but you don’t care because you’ve always loved it and always will – people will soon come to realise that Primark is awesome and you were right all along. Don’t worry that your boobs haven’t come in yet because at 21 they still won’t have and that’s okay, they wont you any happier and in a few years from now there will be so many pretty bralets for people like you that you’ll be pleased you didn’t have them anyway.

Ignore the girls who tease you because you have ‘frizzy’ hair (I know it’s hard) but one day it’ll be really curly and everyone will tell you they wish it was theirs, trust me they will be so jealous. People will ping your hair so much that it will be a little irritating at times but they’ll also ask how you get it so curly and then you wont mind the pinging at all. Before you get carried away thinking how cool this will be DON’T throw away those straighteners. The GHD’s were a great investment and are still going now, perfect for when you want to change up your look a little and for that ‘problem’ hair stage where you have to have your hair chopped off – I know it sounds scary but don’t worry you totally rocked it!

You will feel pressurised to paint your face in make-up on a daily basis but please stay away from the Dream Matte Mousse, the only people that wear that well are Oompa Loompas (sorry girls). When you feel a little left out because mum doesn’t like you wearing a lot of make-up and Brit’s tries to get you in trouble for sneakily wearing mascara to school one day don’t get too upset about it as it’s actually a good thing. You don’t need make up all the time, save it for those special occasions and nights out, your skin will thank you for it in years to come.

There is no nice way to say this but don’t worry that you’re a bit geeky, that you have braces, a wonky nose, freckly face and bushy eyebrows (the pencil thin eyebrow trend will go away). You’ll find someone who loves you for you, I would say despite your flaws but they aren’t flaws they are what makes you different and no one can take that away from you. Perfection isn’t real so don’t go chasing it, learn to embrace what makes you different because somewhere someone wants to be just like you and to have what you have.

Although you may not see it now you’ll be okay and realise that I the things you’ve been teased for which you think matter really don’t in the real world. Being clever doesn’t make you the odd one out it means you have the key to success and so many opportunities. Working hard doesn’t make you a teachers pet, it means you have drive and ambition, keep hold of that because once you start working it will help you stand out from the crowd.

Not having a proper boyfriend at your age isn’t a bad thing it doesn’t mean you’re weird or undesirable, you’ll have a few that aren’t quite right but when you find the one you’ll know it. You’ll try several jobs, qualify as a hairdresser, and then change careers completely. One day you will meet someone who makes you happier than you could ever have imagined who will support you through everything.

After all of that you’ll move out, travel, change paths in your career, start a blog and a fitness journey that you never thought was possible. You’ll be happier than you’ve ever been and be more equipped for what the world throws at you.

Keep your head up, great things are around the corner.

Love your future self x
