Gousto Recipe kits – Tried and tested! ðŸ´

I have seen a lot of make fresh recipe kits recently on TV, Instagram, Twitter and anywhere that they can be marketed. To be honest I had never been interested in buying one before as I usually cook for one (unless my boyfriend is over) so its more cost effective for me to just buy the food I know I need for the week. I then started hearing more about Gousto by Tornado campaigns and was offered a chance to try one of their boxes and anyone who knows me will know that its rare that I turn down an offer for food.

The whole process from ordering to receiving the kit was super easy, all I had to do was register online and pick one meal for four or two meals for two. I picked the one for two people so I could try more than one recipe. Every week there are 22 options to choose from which cater for most different eaters; gluten free, vegetarian and vegan options. If there are certain things you can’t eat dont worry as there is so much choice. Once you’ve picked your meal(s) select your delivery slot and if you’re not going to be home for a few hours you don’t need to worry, the items that need to be kept cool and fresh are stored in a wool-cool bag with ice packs to help keep them cool and you can ask the driver to leave it somewhere safe so its ready when you are.

What my kit included:

  • Wooden spoon
  • Fresh fruit and veg
  • Beef
  • 2 Recipe cards
  • Herbs, spices and other ingredients

Meal one: Posh Open burger and Rosemary Chips

I ordered this meal because it looked like a bit of a treat that I thought me and Andy could enjoy one night during the week so I thought we would give it a taste. When I cooked the meal I was a little worried that there wouldn’t be enough food for the two of us to be full (well enough for Andy because he eats loads) but there was the perfect amount and no waste.

This was by far my favourite of the two meals to eat and when asked Andy went as far as to say it was one of the best burgers he’s ever had and that really is a compliment. I really love that you learnt how to make everything, even the ketchup. I got Andy to help out with the cooking and he really enjoyed that we got to make everything from fresh and said that you could really taste the difference between what we cooked and ready bought items! Another thing I like is that I have now learnt how to make sauces and garnishes that I could use when making other recipes.

💡 A little advice I would give when making this recipe is to read through the recipe card before you start cooking so you know how you are going to do it. Also make sure you have all the ingredients washed and prepared before you start cooking and be sure to check if you need any additional items such as cooking oil and sugar as they are not included and were needed in both recipes I made.

Meal two: Crispy Mushroom Dal & Coriander Chutney

I thought I’d try this recipe as it was Gluten free and vegetarian and I wanted to see what it would be like as I tend to avoid Gluten when I can. Again I really enjoyed this recipe, it was so easy to make which is great because the last thing I want to do when I come home from the gym or work is spend ages cooking a meal for one that I’m going to eat in no time, it had so much flavour! Mine didn’t come out as pretty as the recipe card but I don’t mind too much!

💡Please note that this recipe is a little spicy so don’t put in all the chilli flakes if you don’t like a little bit of kick.

The recipe cards included were very helpful, easy to follow and listed all the ingredients needed on the front so you can make sure you only have the ones you need for the meal(s) you are going to make. The instructions are simple with pictures next to each step and recipes took under an hour to make and prepare (even less time to eat). They also state the type of food they are i.e. Italian, Indian etc.

Personally I really really love these kits, they take the hassle of going shopping away (unless you like shopping like me) and deliver the food to your door. You don’t have to pay delivery on top of your order which is a bonus and your food is kept cold for hours. There’s no risk of wasting ingredients as the perfect amount are supplied. There is a variety of meals available to order and they change every week so you’ll never know what to expect on the menu week after week. Its a subscription box which allows you to order as many or as little times as you would like and pause your subscription if you need/want to. The recipe cards are hole-punched which means you can file them away for future use and have your own book of recipes.

Initially you might think £27.49 is a lot of money for what is essentially four meals however when you then factor in your delivery which is done by courier and that’s usually at least £5 plus the ice packs that you can refreeze, recipe cards, wooden spoon in this case and the perfect amount of ingredients which allow you try try something new from the comfort of your own home without spending a fortune dining out I think its a pretty good deal, even if you just had it once a month as a treat it is a nice way to learn how to cook and try new recipes or to spend time creating alone or with friends and family.
